DESCRIPTION
This is documentary produced by British television production company Independent Television News (ITN) in 1988. It covers the Vietnam War from the beginning of direct US military intervention in Vietnam in 1965 through the fall of Saigon in 1975 and ends with a commentary on the state of post-war Vietnam up to 1988. The documentary is made up almost entirely of news footage of the war with narration from reporter Michael Nicholson, previously a war correspondent in Vietnam.
DESCRIPTION FROM VHS BACK COVER
On the 8th March 1965, three and a half thousand American marines landed on the beaches of Da Nang - the first American combat troops to set foot in Vietnam. By 1967, there were half a million of them - but the world's most powerful war machine found it could not defeat a guerrilla army a fraction of its size.
It was, for the first time, a television war. The TV news reports from the time are a major feature of this video. The reporters who brought the sights and sounds of battle into our living rooms, also told the story of Agent Orange, Napalm and My Lai. When Middle America saw the constant tale of death and destruction, they turned against it. For many it was the influence of television that caused the politicians to bring an end to it all.
This is the story of that war - the war of the helicopter gun ships and the B52s, of the Demilitarized Zone and the Ho Chi Mihn trail; of the Tet Offensive, Ke Sanh and the battle for Newport Bridge; of the girlie bars and "R & R"; the war in which one million Vietnamese and 60,000 Americans died.
